Yes. VectorizeThis traces the visible shapes and colors in a PNG and rebuilds them as SVG paths. The result scales without raster pixels and can be copied as code or downloaded as an SVG file.

What changes when a PNG becomes an SVG?

A PNG stores a fixed grid of colored pixels. Enlarging it eventually reveals soft or blocky edges because the image does not contain geometric instructions. An SVG describes shapes with paths, fills, and a coordinate system, so compatible software can redraw those shapes at different sizes.

Vectorization is therefore a reconstruction process. The converter identifies regions in the raster, traces their boundaries, simplifies the resulting curves, and writes the geometry as SVG. The quality of that reconstruction depends on the source image and the intended output.

When PNG-to-SVG tracing works best

Clean graphics with distinct foreground regions are the strongest candidates. Icons, emblems, line art, signs, and flat illustrations tend to retain recognizable shapes with relatively few paths. A larger and cleaner source also gives the tracer more reliable edge information.

Small images, compression artifacts, shadows, gradients, and photographic texture can introduce extra regions. VectorizeThis tests several settings and compares reconstructed output against the raster, but it cannot recover detail that is absent from the original pixels.

Transparency, backgrounds, and colors

PNG supports transparency, which is useful when the artwork already has no background. When an image has a solid opaque canvas, automatic background detection can remove a high-confidence connected background while preserving the foreground. The original remains available if automatic detection is wrong.

For graphics with a small palette, limiting colors can produce cleaner, easier-to-edit SVGs. For photographs and complex illustrations, retaining more colors usually preserves more visual information at the cost of additional paths and a larger file.

An SVG intended for a website has different priorities from one intended for a cutter. Web output benefits from responsive dimensions and compact markup. Cutting and extrusion workflows need closed regions, conservative geometry, and meaningful physical sizing. Does this simply place my PNG inside an SVG file?

No. The converter traces the raster image and creates SVG path geometry. It does not call an embedded bitmap a vector conversion.

Do my PNG files leave my device?

Conversion runs locally in the browser. Image bytes, SVG output, filenames, and artwork content are not sent to a conversion service.

Which PNG images convert best?

Logos, icons, silhouettes, line art, and illustrations with clear regions generally produce cleaner and simpler paths. Photographs can be traced too, but naturally create more layered and complex SVGs.

Does PNG transparency carry over?

Transparent areas remain transparent. For images with an opaque plain background, the Background control can automatically remove, preserve, or force removal of that region.

Can I prepare an SVG for Cricut or laser cutting?

Yes. Select the relevant use case before conversion. The tool applies target-specific sizing, topology checks, and warnings, but you should still confirm material and machine requirements in the software used to manufacture the result.

Why does the SVG contain many paths?

Detailed textures, gradients, photographs, and antialiased edges may require many vector regions. Simplification and color limits can reduce complexity, with a possible tradeoff in visual fidelity.
